چکیده

While it has been argued that knowledge representation for the World Wide Web must respect the open world assumption due to the “open” nature of the Web, users of the Web Ontology Language (OWL) have often requested some form of non-monotonic reasoning. In this paper, we present preliminary optimizations and an implementation of a restricted version of Reiter’s default logic as an extension to the description logic fragment of OWL, OWL DL. We implement the decision procedure for this logic in the OWL DL reasoner Pellet, and exploit its support for incremental reasoning through update to improve performance. We also extend an open source ontology editor SWOOP with default rules editing support.

WS-Policy and Beyond: Application of OWL Defaults to Web Service Policies

Recently, there has been an increased amount of attention dedicated to WS-Policy it has become a W3C submission and a working group was formed to standardize the specification. In our previous work, we provided a mapping of WS-Policy to OWL-DL. In this paper, we continue that work by analyzing the operation of policy intersection (determining whether two web service policies are compatible). We...

Defaults, Context, and Knowledge: Alternatives for OWL-Indexed Knowledge Bases

The new Web Ontology Language (OWL) and its Description Logic compatible sublanguage (OWL-DL) explicitly exclude defaults and exceptions, as do all logic based formalisms for ontologies. However, many biomedical applications appear to require default reasoning, at least if they are to be engineered in a maintainable way. Default reasoning has always been one of the great strengths of Frame syst...

Revisiting Default Description Logics - and Their Role in Aligning Ontologies

We present a new approach to extend the Web Ontology Language (OWL) with the capabilities to reason with defaults. This work improves upon the previously established results on integrating defaults with description logics (DLs), which were shown to be decidable only when the application of defaults is restricted to named individuals in the knowledge base. We demonstrate that the application of ...

Open vs Closed world, Rules vs Queries: Use Cases from Industry

This paper is a discussion of the application of OWL driven by commercial use cases. These use cases support the integration of OWL with rule-like extensions, taking advantage of open-world semantics, but with defaults and negation as failure. This paper reports on our analysis of these use cases, current solutions using queries, and outlines the role OWL plays in a semantically driven enterpri...
